Dr. Somi Javaid is a board-certified OB/GYN, a leading women’s sexual health and menopause advocate, and the founder of HerMD, a comprehensive women’s health practice revolutionizing the future of women’s healthcare. Her leadership extends beyond clinical practice. Dr. Javaid was instrumental in Peanut’s The Reframing Revolution & The Renaming Revolution campaigns. Both sparked reform in ways we see and discuss women’s healthcare issues. The Reframing Revolution was a pioneering digital media gallery including royalty-free images of women with a range of skin tones, body shapes, and body hair. The Renaming Revolution targeted the subtly sexist vocabulary women experience throughout fertility, pregnancy, and motherhood. She has been at the forefront of reshaping perceptions and breaking stigmas associated with women's health issues.
In recognition of her relentless advocacy, Dr. Javaid was honored with the Women on Top Award as a Trailblazer in Healthcare. She also received the Blossom Award from the White Dress Project, a testament to her work in raising awareness about uterine fibroids and women’s reproductive health. Further affirming her influence, she has been named to Inc.’s Female Founders 250 List (2024) and earned prestigious titles such as the Women Who Mean Business Award and Cincinnati Top Doc for her outstanding contributions to the medical field.
Dr. Javaid’s research contributions include numerous published research posters presented at major medical conferences, reflecting her ongoing commitment to advancing the science and data of women’s healthcare. Her expertise and insights have been featured in top publications such as Forbes, Vogue, Well + Good, as well as national television. Dr. Javaid is a sought-after keynote speaker. In August 2020 Dr. Javaid was invited to speak on the TEDx mainstage, where she addressed gender disparity in sexual healthcare. She’s since shared her expertise at esteemed events and platforms such as the Global Wellness Summit, Canyon Ranch, The Swell, Flow Space, and Let’s Talk Menopause (LTM). In addition, she serves on multiple medical advisory boards including the Medical Advisory Board for LTM, furthering her impact on shaping the future of wellness and healthcare. She has also leant her expertise as a medical expert and medical editor to soon to be published menopause books.
As a passionate educator, in addition to taking stages, she teaches providers at CME conferences and on medical apps. Currently, this country has 1 trained provider for every 33K menopausal patients. She created HerMD University, a multi-modal platform to train providers in the underserved areas of menopause, sexual health and survivorship. This platform has shown superior outcomes to the status quo.
A true pioneer, Dr. Javaid continues to lead exciting changes that are actively improving healthcare for both female patients and the providers who serve them.
Dr. Somi Javaid’s defining moment
Dr. Javaid was a 21-year-old pre-med student when her 45-year-old mother was rushed into emergent quadruple bypass surgery with a condition so severe that if the heart attack had come, she would not have survived. Fortunately, the surgery was successful, but this experience and the time leading up to it became a defining moment for Dr Javaid.
She witnessed how doctors repeatedly dismissed her mother despite obvious symptoms of cardiac disease and a family history of both cardiac disease and sudden cardiac death. Pain in her left arm and chest and shortness of breath were attributed to anxiety. It was suggested that the demands of motherhood stressed her out, and doctors advised her to reduce caffeine intake. Dr. Javaid quickly realized that her mother’s story was not unique. Women’s health concerns were then, as they are today, largely brushed under the rug. It was then that the seed for what would become HerMD and Dr. Javaid’s mission to reimagine women’s healthcare was born.
Today Dr. Javaid is at the forefront of exciting changes actively improving healthcare for both female patients and their providers through her work with HerMD and her advocacy work beyond.
